90 GT - Timing chain replacement
I'm attempting to chain out my timing chain on my stang. I have only few a questions.
1 - With only 72,000 on the clock, should I do this. The reason I'm asking is I'm fixing to install a new water pump, aluminum radiator, all new hoses, 130A
alternator, fan, etc.. I have the whole front part of the motor off and while I was thinking while I'm this far, change the timing chain. But if I don't have to I won't, the car runs excellent as is ( bone stock ) except for headers, gear, C&L meter, cold air intake & MSD ingnition.
2 - If I decide to install a new timing chain, does the oil pan need to be dropped. My buddy was suggesting that along with possibly raising the motor up some.
If I could get some feedback I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

If all you are doing is replacing the water pump the front cover doesn't have to be removed. If you pull the cover I would replace the chain but the only reason to pull the cover would be for a cam change or Chain Swap. Personally I've never dropped the pan to remove or install the front cover. I have a way of rolling them back in.
Your 90 Model should have a Good double roller chain in it already and if it were me I'd wait until I did a Cam swap before replacing that Chain. I've seen these things with 200K+ on the clock with the stock chain in place. If the timing cover comes off for any reason I replace the chain. Timing Chains are cheap. Putting a new one in is just good sence. If I have over 10K miles on one of mine and decide to do a Cam swap I'll put in a fresh chain.
