Default AMP light

The other day I was driving around, and i got a whiff of that wonderful smell when wireing is burning. lol. well anyways the person that had the car before did a shotty wire job with the stero, and after smelling that the radio turned off and the red AMP light with the battery next to it came on. So I took it home and parked for the night. The next day i started it up again (unlike a honda it does not heal itself) and the light was still there. The stero will turn on, but none the speakers come on. I volt tested the battery and it came to 12.23 when the car was KOEO and 11.93 when the car is KOER. Anyways, my question is, is my alternator bad or did somthing happen with the wiring under the dash that is messin things up? lol im not good with wiring, any help is apreciated
