Default gas drama

about 2 weeks ago my car ran out of gas at a quarter tank. filled it up havent let it go past half tank since. well today it ran out at half. well it seemed to. i got out and shook the car and could hear a decent amount of sloshing going on in the tank so i knew it wasnt empty. i took the gas cap off. and the car started. is the cap supposed to be vented? what i think is happening is that the tank is being sucked flat and the pump can only suck it so far.

Yes there is supposed to be a vent line comming off the tank to the canister that is in the front (I think). If that vent is bent, clogged, plugged, deleted, etc then you either need to replace it or get a vented gas cap.

Hey 84Conversion50, I live in the ABQ area and if you do too, you are going to need a good, operable gas cap for emissions anyhow. I have a 90 GT also and when I had mine smog checked, they hooked up the cap to the computer and checked it. It is supposed to vent, and you may even hear it when you take it off.

some fyi for ya i had the exact same problem with my first 87 traveling, car had 1/2 tank of gas and just started dying out, luckily i was a mile from a gas station so i footed it and put a gallon of gas in it and it fired up filled the tank and sure enough it had a 1/2 tank left wtf? so i kept it as full as i could till i got home and then dropped the tank here the damn baffle that the fuel pump sits in broke loose from the bottom of the tank(there only spot welded) replaced the tank and the problem was gone. only way your gonna know for sure is to drop the tank (very easy) and pull the fuel pump out and check the baffle.
