coolant
Okay so my coolant light came on the other day. I didn't have any coolant around the house and didn't want to run hot, so I just added some distilled water. Is this okay? Should I go buy some coolant and add a little bit so that I don't mess up my ratio of coolant to water? Also is there any easy way to know how much coolant you have? I never can tell how much I have. Thank-you for the help.

RE: coolant
You always want more water than coolant ratio. If you need to top off your car always use water (distilled is best) and you will be perfectly fine. When time comes to change to coolant fluid then that is when you can fill with the ratio you want.
But until then you don't have to check you ratio because it will be ok.....unless you live up north where it gets really really cold...then a proper ratio must be obtained (only when cold)

no its a half and half ratio
no its a half and half ratio
Just checked the bottle and yeah....it is half half or a 70/30 ratio of more coolant.
But it still is ok if you have more water....if need be.
Coolant was mainly designed for the purpose of not boiling off too quickly and not freezing in your car when too cold. Yes it does have great heat transfer capabilities but you cant beat a specific heat of 4.18 that water has
So if you really want a proper mixture just drain and pour you up a new batch....it wont hurt.
