Lightbulb Gauge cluster dissasemble

I am thinking I need to dissasemble the gauge cluster (take it off) to gain access to a "slosh sensor" that may have gone bad in the 1989 5.0 lx hatchback I own.

The fuel gauge is not working right and even though many say it is the fuel sending unit, I just found out that it may be the slosh sensor , which is behind the gauge cluster.

So, I figure before I buy a fuel sending unit I will try to replace this sensor and see if it fixes the problem.

Anyone know where there is a how to on this? I will refer to the haynes I guess, but I wanted to see if there was a pictorial kind of how to somewhere that would make this easy. Or easier.

Should I swap to a 140mph gauge while Im at it? Maybe white face gauges? I will also be looking at the speedo cable cause I think it may be squeeking, and also going to be changing the speedo gear which is found at the other end of the cable, in the tranny right? I am switching to a 3.55 gear later and need to do this also.

Thanks everyone, please chime in and let me know.

Brent

You don't even need to take off the lens you can leave all the gauges intact the slosh module just screws on the back of the cluster assembly.

So I can reach up behind the gauge cluster and access the slush sensor?

mjr,

I dont know if this type of problem allows me to troubleshoot that easy. The fuel gauge isnt working properly, so they say its the fuel sending unit, then I hear that it can be the sloosh sensor. What do you think?

I have the same problem. I've replaced my tank sending unit and put in a used gauge that I know works. What is the slosh sensor? Where can I get one?
Thanks
Frank

I think the sensor is on the back, lower right side of the gauge cluster, they say its a little card like computer chip like sensor. I amagine you have to seek out the sensor at parts stores or junk yards. If you find two let me know, I need one too!
