Default Odd noise at high speeds?

1989 5.0 GT
From about 85mph up until I dont want to take it any faster there is a loud pumping noise, its like a whoo whoo whoo whoo whoo...Cant think of any other way to describe it! It just sounds like something pumping, but its very loud and only once I hit about 85 mph. The noise stays very steady, not increasing in noise or getting faster as the speed increases. It clearly sounds like it is coming from the engine..Not sure if this will make a difference but I have 3.73 gears. Thanks for any help!

Unsure if this is relevant- Walk outside to a HUGE puddle of coolant on the ground!! Found no busted hoses or anything, so it is being diagnosed now. Im thinking the water pump..Could that be related to the pumping noise? A failing water pump crying out to be saved?

Water pump replaced, have not had a chance on the highway to see if thats what was making the noise! I doubt it..But anybody, no ideas? Im just afrait it could lead to a major problem, because its obviously not a normal noise.. anyyyy help or suggestions are appreciated!!!

my first thought was maybe a wheel bearing or u-joint or something to do with your rear end gears, because ive heard of people having loud noises like that from gears and driveshaft problems, but the coolant thing is something completely different. hope you can find an answer

Just a thought...from someone who has experienced cooling fan clutch failure...

Your fan is attached to your water pump. I'd check to see if your fan clutch has failed or not, thereby causing the fan blades to actully act as an air brake once you hit 85 mph (and the resulting "pumping" sound).

Also, the added back and forth stresses that this had placed on your water pump may have induced its failure and the resulting coolant leak.

Good luck!
