Short block dilemma...
Hey everyone, I recently got a 302 short block that I got machined and bored over .30. Ive been looking for a 331 stroker kit but all the ones ive found are too expensive. Lowest price I founnd was $1200. But I found a 347 stroker kit for $800, I heard all about the 347 being natorious for burning oil, I have the money to get the kit now but I wanna know your opinion, should I just wait to get the 331 or just go for the 347? I want it sooo bad.
Heres the link for the 347: http://coasthigh.com/Specials/Specials_current.htm

Sorry no feed back to help you but... How much did it cost you to have your block machined or did you do it yourself? I was planning on doing a 331 stroker within the next year or so, thats why I ask.

RE: Short block dilemma...
My Dad has a friend with a machine shop and he only charged me $350 to machine the block and polish and port the heads.
Also my next question is can I use the stock heads (polished and ported of course) running 10.0:1 compression? Also I think I may have to take the heads back to take them to w/61cc head and .015 deck is tht possible?

you may of heard the problems with a 347 but who are these ppl that are building those motors. a good shop with good parts shouldnt have a junk motor
you get what you pay for remember that, sometimes too cheap is bad same as too much is bad
depends on the flow rate of the stock heads if they will work with a larger motor

I hear that the oil burning 347's are pretty much a thing of the past, I still be cautous of a cheap though. As for your heads, as Quik said it depends on much there are flowing , my gut tells me that you will see big gains with an aftermarket head though.

RE: Short block dilemma...
Yea the oil burning issues aren't a problem anymore with quality kits, the problem was from companies putting the piston pins up to the oil rings. The 331 is a much more desireable setup because you don't have issues with pin placement or the crappy rod ratio you get with 347's.
