Default elec prob

heres what i have so far. went out this morning and tried to start the car and nothing. tested the battery and it read .6 volts. yes thats point 6 volts. so i after getting it jumped i started to drive it down the road when it cut out on me. luckily i was rolling so i popped the clutch and it started back up until about 200 ft and it died again. i was thinking alternator until i noticed smoke rolling out from behind my stereo. what was burning was the cable casing for the wire feeding the aftermarket voltage gauge. the odd thing is that after i got it jumped the voltage gauge was reading +30 volts. never seen that before. when i checked the battery again after it died the second time it was low. now it reads 11 volts. just wondering what could cause this power overload on these cables. no blown fuses and cant find the fusible link from the ignition. thanx in advance for the help.
