Default 97 NHRA mustang

Looking for some of you guys to give me a little input. I would like to build a drag car for next year (2006) Not no 9 sec machine, and not pure stock just something I can have fun in. I am a gal,but want to compete against the guys. Maybe I am going about it wrong. But I bidded on a stolen/recovery stripped 1997 mustang and got it. Hopefully its a good year to work with. Its missing the interia. Which is ok. The body is nice. I am not sure when the 2006 NHRA book comes out. But I am just thinking ahead. Like maybe getting the body setup with a roll cage, connecting the frame rails etc.and looking into a engine size. I have a 302, and 3 - 351Ws Ready to send out to the machine shop. Or should I go 460. I know some of you guys out there have bad *** stangs, thats cool. But mostlikey you have several sponsers to. I don't, I am my own sponser. And I work 9-6 as a RN. But I know I can do it. I will be grateful for any info that you may offer. Except from guys thinkin its a boys only sport. THANKS Tracy

you really need to figure out how fast you want to go now and down the road. your limited with a 302 they cant handle much more than 500 hp. and you nedd to look really deep in your purse!

First get the current NHRA 2005 rule book, if there are any revisions for 2006 they will be very slight and should not affect your build. Next you need to figure out how fast you really want to go, and then build the car to be a bit faster than that, because down the road you don't want to be redoing a bunch of major chassis stuff. Currently the rules are, 11.49 and faster needs at least a 5 point roll bar, personally I would put in a 6 point cage with a halo bar and a dash bar. You will need new seat belts (which must be replaced every 3 or 5 years I can't remember). The list of what you need is pretty long but it should not be too bad. As for the motor I would do one of your 351's, people like the 460 because of it's cubes but they are not really that great and they are alot heavier, not to mention more difficult to fit in the car. Good luck.

well glad to see a woman into stangs like this. i would go about getting a cage, subframes, torque box reinforcments, u/l control arms, tubular K member up front, coilovers, alot of weight reduction. i would build up a 351 block or the 302. i wouldnt do the 460

Maybe you're talking about the stock 302 block can't handle more than 500 hp? Find out exactly what you want from this car and we can help you out a little more.

if i were you i would go the 351 route because u can stroke that bad boy to a 427 which is pretty much big block displacement out of a small block.....and the 351 will fit in a lot easier then a 460 which takes a whole lot cutting to make it fit. goodluck keep us informed
