Speedometer Problem (Diagnosed kinda)
Hello. I'm VERY new to the Mustang world, but not to the car world in general. I just bought the car 2 days ago, and lastnight I was driving and the speedometer and odometer just up and stopped working. I did some searches, and came up with pushing the button many times. This did nothing. I ended up bringing it to a shop and they put it up on the lift. They checked the speedometer cable and said that it was fine, and checked the speed sensor (I think that's what it was? it was the part that the speedometer cable plugged into). They said that part was fine as well. He took a mirror and took a peak into the trans and said "There's your problem." He said that there should be a little plastic gear in there that turns the thing that the speedometer cable was plugged into. He said it looks like it broke apart because it's not in there anymore. He said there's a port on the back of the trans to access it, but he doesn't do transmissions. I called around, they want like minimum $200 labor to fix this little plastic gear.
Is this something I can get and fix myself for pretty cheap? If anyone has a how to on this, I'm sure I could do it myself. If I pull off that cover, is trans fluid going to pour out? Thanks in advance.
Btw: Forgot to mention, this is a 5-speed trans.

You will have to remove the whole trans just to replace the little gear, and it does require you to tear down the transmissoin just to acces it,since there is no "port" to replace it...if it is your first time for doing something like this, then i recommend to turn off the phone and buy a case......and good luck.

I think he is talking about the worm gear inside the tranny that turns the speedo gear.

Yeah, I think that's what it is. Crap. I was really hoping that this wasn't going to be a couple hundred dollers fix. Sounds like it is.

Actully I might be able to make a tutorial even. I think I'm getting ready to do my 7th transmission swap. [8D] I really need to make up my mind on which transmission I want.

Not at all. I fixed mine on two different transmissions. The gear was $16 from ford + the cost of transmission fluid. The total was around $25 if I recall correctly. & it's very easy to do.

That would be great! However, how soon do you think you could do this? This is my only car now, and I have about 5 days left until I have to head back to school.
