'94 dies when gets warm
Hello all, I have a couple questions regarding my '94 5.0, actually its not mine its my brothers. Let me give you a little background on the car and hopefully some of you wise gents and ladies can give me some feedback.
My brother bought this car when he was stationed out in Washington at Ft. Lewis and when he got home asked me to take a look at it. He said the car wouldnt pull past 3000 rpm so I unhooked the mass air flow sensor and determined that this was probably the issue. I replaced the sensor the next day and he hasnt had any problems up until about a month ago. I told him to unplug the mass air flow sensor to see if it possibly went bad but it didnt fix the problem.
I drove it around about a week ago for about 45 mins and after the car warmed up to normal operating range it began to run rough and eventually died while idling at a stoplight. I managed to get into a parking lot and decided to unhook the mass air flow sensor again, to see if it made any difference, and it had no effect.
This has happened a few times in the week that Ive had the car. As long as the car is cool, or driven when its cool (Ive driven it multiple times at night without this effect) the car doesnt have any issues. But if its hot outside and after the car has warmed up it runs rough and will eventually die. I actually had it die while driving down the interstate at 70mph.
So im basically stumped. I dont know much about fuel injected 5.0 as all my experience is with a carbureted 5.0. To date the only thing thats been done to the car is had the ignition module replaced and the mass air flow sensor. Any help would be appreciated and I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have, Thanks!

I'm having this same problem w/my '95 GT. When starting cold it fires up but after it runs and is shut down but when I try to start it up again the key turns and I hear the fuel pump running but it won't start or even crank until it has sat for 30 mins to an hr and cooled off. From my research on the SN95 forums the problem appears to be a Distributor Pick-up Assembly aka PIP sensor or stator assembly. This distributor gets hot and as a result the PIP sensor won't allow the car to start until it has cooled off. The PIP is connected to the distributor which has to be removed to be replaced. The part number from Advanced Auto Parts is ME58 and the cost is $30.58; the option is to replace the whole distributor.
Per Motorcraft.com, the distributor only fits the 94-95 models
Here are some links that educated me on the problem:

the only concern I have is that when my issue pops up the car will crank over and most times will continue running for about 30 seconds. During this time its running really rough as if its almost not getting enough fuel and/or its not firing correctly.
Generally I can manage to keep it running if I keep the rpm's above 3000. Last week while driving on the interstate was the first time Ive had it actually die while driving at cruising speeds.
Ive also read a few articles that the tpi sensor can cause similar problems when the car gets hot so I may try replacing that as well. Regardless thank you for the links they are quite helpful!

I agree with these guys its the PIP i replaced one in the original distibutor then it happened again 5yrs. later so i replaced the distributor with a new one in my 95GT, also check your timing. When my mass air flow sensor went bad it started loping real bad and would barely run. Good Luck
