Just bought an 88 LX 5.0 with 52,000 documented miles. It's been sitting in a garage the past 3 years only to be started once a month or so. After driving it for a week with no issues, I parked it on a slope in front of my house Friday night (don't know if this is even relevent) and then jumped in it Saturday afternoon to find that I have only 1st and 2nd gears. I'm going to change the fluid and filter tonight, but in my mind it's doubtful that it corrects anything. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for help and I'm happy to be back in a Mustang for the first time since 1993!!

check the linkage, i had the same problem with my 86 it wouldnt shift from 2nd to 3rd so i sprayed the linkage with wd40 and wiggled it around

I've investigated and gathered more information on the problem. The transmission is shifting into the next gear, just not pulling good. It does pull in 3rd and overdrive, but very little. I placed the car on jackstands last night and dropped the pan. It looks like it had never been changed, although was pretty clean. The filter was pretty dirty, but the fluid wasn't bad. I replaced the filter and fluid, but still the same problem. I think if it were the regulator valve it wouldn't shift at all, so its probably something that I can't fix. Any other thoughts are appreciated.
