Default Roasted wire after connecting battery terminals

My 1990 gt was sitting for about a month with a removed battery (i disconnected it). Today i went to start the car up and reconnect the battery. The second i put the negative terminal on i got the normal sparks you get and as i slid it on a sudden flickering and ticking occured and then a big cloud if smoke shot up from the right side or the bay (next to the battery) and i quickly pulled off the negative. It a stopped and it looks as if a wire connecting to something was fried. I dont know electric but it was a green wire connected with others by the ignition coil. It burned a hole in the wires shell id say. I didnt bother starting the car. Trouble shooters?

You have a short to ground somewhere in the circuit that the burned wire is on. These are hard to track down over the internet. You’re going to have to track this down yourself with a multi-meter and circuit diagram, or pay someone to do it. Sorry.

This kind of problem sometimes happens for cars that have been sitting for a while. Little animals, like mice, take shelter in the nooks & crannies of the car and love to chew on things. Most likely something chewed on a wire causing the short.

Good luck...

would it be ok to connect the battery and proceed as normal to drive? I don't want to cause some electrical issue or possible fire. Just until I get someone to look at which is asap.

May not run after this short. Error to the side of caution. Tow the Mustang would be the best option.

Definitely don’t drive it or reconnect the battery. A short that causes a wire to burn that quickly is a nasty one and can easily cause a fire. Tow it to your mechanic or have your mechanic come to you. Good luck...
