Have you tried unplugging the big plug and checking it and make sure it didn't melt?

ORIGINAL: Tims 88GT

how could you hook it up wrong?

Yeah that is what I thought. But being 15 and in a hurry because you are late for something else you can forget to do something. There were two plugs that plugged into my escort's alt. Well I forgot to plug in the one I couldn't see (because it was on the underside of the alt) and turned the car on. Well it burned. That is why you should never work on your car when you are rushed.

I just took it back to the auto store and they gave me another one

yeah i understand but im always in a rush, i tend to get stuff done fast that i want to do, but it was hooked up right, i think i just overheated it, i mean my batter was all the way dead, and i was letting it charge up and my fans were kicking on and off, and they kicked back on and the alt went up in smoke it was kinda kool to watch but it sucks coes now i need a new one. i have left boath plugs off before and i was drivin at night and my lights started to dim so i pulled over and checked to see if the alt was hooked up and it wasent so i hooked it up and went and nothing happend it was fine.
