need AOD trans help!!!!!!!!
when i smash on it my car seems like it wont shift. I think its stuck in second and the car is only going like 70 and the rpms go up to like 4000 then i have to shift into overdrive because it sounds like the motor is going to blow. I did put 3.73 gears and thats when i noticed it.never noticed it before with the old gears because the car was so slow before.And when you race with an aod do you leave it in drive, and can you max out your car(top speed) in drive with an aod or do you hafe to put it in overdrive. i need help!!!!!!!!.thanks.

RE: need AOD trans help!!!!!!!!
When i first tried topping out when my 91 gt convertible was auto, i had it in drive, it would go 90 @ 4500rpm, drive only goes upto 3rd gear, overdrive goes into 4th and yea when i used overdrive i was going 115 @ 4000. Everything was stock, and i always drove in overdrive. Gotta tell ya though i had it changed to a 5 speed manual, MUUUUCH faster

RE: need AOD trans help!!!!!!!!
an aod will not shift into od under wide open throttle (WOT) no matter what gear it's in.
driving around town, or using the aod "shuffle" will absolutely destroy the trans.
leave it in "d" for driving and racing. you can use 1 then shift to "d" , if you want...but don't try to hold 2nd by pulling back to 1 after you have shifted to second...it will hold second, but causes some intermediate clutches to stay engaged when they shouldn't be , causing premature failure.
aod's don't like to downshift that well...you need to find the sweet spot.
when your going 70...you should be in second...it won't ds to 1st even you try manually....not w/out a manual valvebody
that would also cure the 2-3 being in the same shifter position problem as well.
the reason you think it needs to ds when your going 70 is the lack of torque (from lack of gear) an aod has the following gear ratios compared to a 5-speed......
1st = 2.40 compared to 3.35 (5-speed)
2nd= 1.47 compared to 1.93 (5-speed)
3rd = 1 compared to 1.29 (5-speed)
4th in an aod is od (.68:1)........4th in a 5-speed is 1:1 like the 3rd in aod and 5th is .68:1
so bottom line is, your dropping more rpms between shifts, and geared way less..... 1st gear in an aod w/ 4.56 rear gears = total gearing of 10.944 ...... a 5-speed w/ 3.08's still in it has a total gear of 10.318 and w/ 3.73's is 12.495
so you can see the problem.
my guess is the tranny is working....when it starts to "float" in od.....wandering rpm's then ds's back to d....then it's toast, the od band is gone and usually the first to go bad. unless you snap an input shaft.

RE: need AOD trans help!!!!!!!!
So your saying that this will ruin a AOD. I take off hard in 1st, red line it, then shift up one and back real quick to (this is when the tires break loose) 1st postion but it's actually 2nd, then red line it again, shift up one spot again, which is 2nd spot but actually 3rd now cause it's shifted 3 times. This will destroy a AOD? Hope you could follow my post LOLOL. This is the way I was told to do shift these?
