New Stang, New problem. Help?
We have just picked up a new to us 1988 white on white conv. 5.0 auto Mustang w/87k miles. The car is in great shape and runs great except for one minor flaw.
After running for a while (15 minutes or so) it will die like the fuel has been cut off. Pull off to the side of the road, wait 5 seconds. It starts right back up with no hesitation. It will only run for a matter of minutes before it dies again. If it cools down for a while it will run fine again for 15-30 minutes It seems like there is something that is heating up and then only at that point does it fail. If I had to guess I'd say it was a sensor somewhere. I'm not too awfully familiar with the 5.0 but am a decent garage mech. (we also used to own an 86 black on black 5.0 5spd vert w/68k but it was basically a garage ornament that was driven occasionally and maintained normally.)
Has anyone come across this before? What should I test or look for?
Thanks, Eddie

RE: New Stang, New problem. Help?
I cleaned the crap out of the IAC-valve today. It seemed like it was pretty gunked. The idle seems a bit better and I thought I had it fixed until it did it again. I have been pointed towards the Dist. Control Module this time, anyone care to second this as a possible fix?

I had this same problem a few years back on my 87 F-150 302. I pulled the dist. & replaced the module & it solved the problem. A good way to check before you go to the trouble of pulling the dist. is to pull the cap off & see if you can touch or poke itwith a small screwdriver after it has warmed up. If it seems soft or spongy like its most likely bad. Before I replaced that part, I had spent $300 on all the normal stuff, & nothing else made a difference.
