I am in the process of doing this to mine now...If you want all the paint off and down to bare metal then 80 Grit is common.....Although if the original paint is not that bad it can be scuffed with 320-400 and then re-painted...

I started sanding mine with 80and a body guy told me to stop because the base/original coat was in good condition still...

Best paper is 220 grit. Then go to 240. Finally 320. Use a block and make sure you get the edges really well. If you don't, the paint well peel away. Good luck.

320/400 grit is you are just scuffing the clear to shoot over it. That is if your car has clear. Some 90's do not, two-stage ws an option nfrom Ford at that time. 320/400 is what painters use for blend panels

80 to hit bare metal
220 to clear up the crappy old paint to get to a decent base or primer coat
320-400 to just get the clear off, i recomend 400 for this.
1000-2000 for wetsend when your finishing up

I would:

-Block with 180 or 220 (Using as long of strokes as possible with a long block as well 8 to 12 inches)
-Sand down to where your just starting to see the factory primer
-Lay 2 coats epoxy primer
-Follow up with 2-4 coats high build primer
-Blockagain with 400 with guide coat to see your highs and low spots
-once everything is awesome gently wet sand with 500
-then use your paint of choice I reccomend Bc./cc
