Could I get in to a Mustang?
Hello everyone. My name is Shelby, and I'm wondering if I'll be (financially) able to get in to a Mustang next spring. I'm a current college student, and I currenty drive an Acura Integra. Although I love the fuel economy of a 4 banger, my girlfriend moved 20 miles closer, so my commute has shortened considerably. School and work are only ~5 miles away. I think I could take the hit of daily driving a V8. I also don't like the fear of theft that comes with owning a nice Honda. Guys on the Honda boards are constantly worried about having their cars being stolen. Do Mustang owners have this same fear?
I'd also like to modify my car, but I hate the typical Honda exhaust note. That's one of the big reasons I want a V8; I'd love a rumble instead of a bumble (like the bee). Mods are much cheaper for Hondas, but I think the V8 exhaust note would satisfy me.
I'm painting my Integra at the moment, but after it's painted, I think it'll be worth at least $4k (hopefully more). Could this get me in to a 94-95 GT? I don't want a Foxbody (I'd rather drive my Integra). I'm not sure if the 5.0 new body style Mustangs are more desireable than the 4.6 Mustangs, but I figure the older ones would be cheaper. Also, I work at a bodyshop, so cars that need bodywork are a plus.
Clifnotes:
Can $4k put me in to a non-foxbody GT that needs bodywork?

i just check autotrader for ya and there's posting up all over the country for 94-95 GT's for under 4 grand, and fyi...the 5.0 in the 94-96 tends to be more desirable because 1) the cost of new parts is CONSIDERABLY less expensive and 2) the general power output and integrity of the engine block isnt all that great and hard to modify without f/i for 96-98 GT's(incase you know, you catch the bolt-on bug) but its real good to hear you wantin some american muscle like that...keep us posted on how things come along! Welcome btw
Check the paper and auto trader publications in your area. I know that in South Texas you could definately do it. Don't worry about gas mileage. When our gas prices reach the European prices you can start to worry.
If Dan Blocker (Hoss from Bonanza) could
fit into a corvette (both financially
and physically) I am sure you could
do the same.
Check the kelly blue book for prices
And an offer is always beter than
walking away without talking.
Let's face it, if you fix it up to look like
a nice show car it will be admired by
kids that would like to drive it.
A good alarm, and maybe some smart
anti theft measures like fuel pump
electrical shutoff will dissable the
car in the middle of the road. Leaving
little time to trash the car.
I live in NEPA and leave my keys in all my cars
as I would wing up loosing them.
It depends on where you live.

i think you should definitely be able to find one...ya just gotta hunt around.
and on a sidenote...the gas mileage isnt THAT bad. prolly worse than an integra...but i get in the area of 20 mpg combo city/highway.

If you want the different body style and you want a 5.0, then you are looking at a 94 - 95 Mustang. As stated above, you can find them for that price. And I think you may be surprised how cheap it is to upgrade and mod these cars. There are even some small things you can do for free to increase HP.
Thanks everyone!
It's good to hear that the gas mileage isn't abysmal in these cars. I actually only get ~25-26mpg city in my Honda. Snowy situations might also worry me, but I'll most likely hang on to the FWD until the spring. Next winter I hope to have a beater Cherokee for the snow (and some light wheeling).
I learned not to jump on the first one I see from buying the Integra. Got stuck with the (less desired) tan interior and the less powerful non-vtec engine.
And to anyone wondering, yes, I was named after Carroll Shelby. Maybe that's why I want to own a muscle car.
