Stick to the 302 and attack it with mods

You must have special equipment to bore a block. It is also bored to match specific pistons. So you will need the pistons fist before having the block bored.
You would have it bored .030 over. That will give you a 306. You will need a stroker kit to make it into a 347, which includes special pistons, rods and a longer stroke crankshaft. he bottom of the cylinder walls will nned to be notched as well to clear the crank. Here is an inexpensive kit that will work fine on the street http://store.summitracing.com/partde...;autoview=sku.
This along with the TFS track heat H/C/I kit will get you really close to your goal.http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku

It is the stroke that gives you the power, not the bore.

Check out www.coasthigh.com for 331-347 bottomends already assembled and machined. I believe they are in the $2400 range.

Then, add some good heads, cam, and intake to it:

- AFR 185cc
- FTI custom camshaft, www.flowtechinduction.com - $325. Better driveability, power, and vacuum that your OTS counterparts.
- Holley Systemax intake
- 1.75" longtubes
- 80mm MAF and 70mm TB

Easy 350-400 rwhp with full driveability.

Ed Curtis @ www.flowtechinduction.com will set you up!

Been there, done that...

Now, on to porting heads...

There is more to proper porting than seeing how much you can get them to flow. Much of it comes in the form of the shape of the cylinder head.

Do not polish the intake side of the runners. The exhaust is fine, but not the intake.

Many raise the roof with porting, and add epoxy on the bottom floor, to create a "high-port" entrance.

Some swirl is good for emissions guys.

OK soo, again dont really want to buy a new block soo i should have mine bored out to a 306 then increase the stroke with the SCAT kit, then I can go from there, and that is pretty decently priced. As far as the rest of it goes, would buying the trickflow kit be the best way to go, or would it be better to buy the parts individually. I personally dont like the way the sytemax intake looks, but thats not gonna matter too much I imagine. (Please correct me if I am mistaken about the power difference ) As far as the camshaft is concerned, it sounds like going through FTI would be better being that its a custom piece. I agree with the MAF, TB, and longtube headers.

Random Question: Is it a good idea to paint your engine block? I've heard it can cause overheating problems.

Painting your block does not cause overheating problems. Been there, done that Ran the same.

You can use your stock block. It needs to be machined. For a 347, you will need the block bored/honed to the piston size. It will require new crank and rods.

Stroking does not allow the use of the stock rotating assembly.

most engine builders will paint the block..it has no effect what so ever. When you send the block in to be 'stroked' or simply rebuilt the person doing the job will determine if the walls need to be cleaned up the little bit by removing .030 of material (known as bored 30 over)..that's all it's for, offers no power in return. I know 5-10 thousand seems like alot, but you have to understand how much product your purchasing....just a few considerations:
TB 200
Maf upgrad 200
injectors 200 to 300
fuel pump 150
new water pump (trust me anything over 12yrs old you better do it now) 150
Gaskets 50-70
new Tstat (see reasons related to waterpump) 15
Tune...94 GT ECU is not going to enjoy the HCI at all on the stroked engine...figure 400-500
Total of approx 1500...now you can start the good stuff

Machine cost to prep block and machine for 347 kit...1000 (magnaflux, etc)

347 kit 850

Trickflow kit 2300

Assembly charge 750-1000 including turning the flywheel and balancing the engine

install charge into vehicle 500

You'll likely need a fresh clutch installed for the power upgrade..and this is simply the BEST SINGLE TIME TO DO IT...don't skimp and leave the stocker, it won't last. 300-500 depending.

misc products like coolant enough oil for two oil changes (first one done at 50 miles on new engines) and filters 100

I know I forgot some stuff...but this is some basic costs your going to incurr
