i had to let the car get back to operating temp for the coolant to properly circulate. i kept adding coolant to the overflow tank and it filled itself. i had to do that 2 or 3 times
Yeah, these cars can be finicky about coolant levels. Sometimes it's never an issue than other times it's boiling over or the low coolant light is on. I should be able to work it out after a few attempts. I'm just hoping that thermostat housing doesn't leak.

Does anyone know where the coolant tempurature sensor is? Mine was bobbing up and downbut I assume it's because it was hitting pockets of hot air.

Overheating is often caused by air pockets in the system. An old trick is to drill a 1/8" hole in the thermostat base plate before installing it. Although someone told me yesterday that new ones often have that hole already there.

Anyway, you need to burp the system better, get rid of the air pockets. That's why you have left over coolant. Jack up the front of the car so the radiator fill is the highest point in the system. Add coolant until it's full. Let is sit fo a while to equalize. Then add more.

Make sure your recovery tank is about half full, well above the full mark. After a few heat cycles, it should burp itself.
