best bet is remove entire carpet and hang it out to dry, the matting on the back side will never dry if you don't although the outer carpet will feel dry , months later gauranteed if you were to pull the carpet the underside will have still retained moisture and that's not good for the floor pans

do I even need to have the mass backing on the carpet? or does that just help keep heat/ sound levels down?

edit...

also found the culprit may also be the trunk leaking.. the water may work its way in from the rear of the car to the pass compartment... the weatherstrip is fine, its actually rust behind the taillight... I know it sounds bad, but I may just pull the taillight and seal it as best as I can.. I can see from the pass side behind the trunk liner the rust breaking through a welding seam.. I literally just noticed it cuz my tool kit opened up and I was looking for sockets allover the trunk this afternoon...

so the car will need some metal work one day...

I am itching to convert everything in my interior minus the white seats to black... maybe its time to do so, well, once I fix the leaks...

you don't really need all the backing in fact the new ones from 50 resto don't come with half as much on them as factory originals did
