painting heads
i've ported my '66 heads, bowl work, blah blah blah. anyways im getting ready to paint the heads. they are all clean right now down to the bare casting. but i was wonderign if there was anything else i should or could do to make them look a lot nicer when i go to paint them? i have a sand blaster and glassbead media...would that change the texture at all and leave a smoother finish? is it worth it to blast them? or is there any other media i could use that would leave a better finish to paint on? i seen heads advertised as "glassbeaded" not sure what it does. any help would be appreciated.
also...
i got all the rest of my stuff last night and i totally forgot to take pictures. but i got my comp cam, valves, degree wheel, pushrod checker, guideplates. everything else i got from my last order. i did forget to order my head studs and gasket kit. also if anyone ever has summit discount coupons that you wont use before they expire... could you PM me the code? i'll be ordering more stuff in the near future and i'd like all the help i can get

The only thing about the Summit discount codes like on Summit Bucks is they are specific to the address they are sent to.
If you really want to pretty them up just whip out your porting kit and give them a smooth down. It's not that hard because you don't have to remove a lot of material. I have a photo somewhere around here where I did a set of cast Iron 336781 Big Block Chevy heads for a Chevelle show car I had. I spent about 6 -8 hours with my die grinder and anything else that I had handy that would smooth metal and they came out looking incredible. It added something to the engine bay that when people looked in they knew it was differant but couldn't quite put their finger on. I put about 20 coats of high temp paint on them as well. It comes out looking sweet.

well i thought about layering up the high temp paint and them smooth down the high spots to avoiding using my porting tools.it wouldnt take very long to do like you said about 8 hours or so. but yea i wanted to go for that smooth aluminum look(i know they wont look aluminum i just like the smooth look) even though the heads are getting painted dark dark blue and the rest of the motor black.
also when painting the oil valley do you think deep blue would bee seen in the oil if it does chip off or should i do bright red/yellow to see it easier in the oil if it does begin to chip off?

they are specific who they are sent to but not who uses them. my last order was a 20$ gift certificate from a rebuild kit bought by a customer. they just let me use it. they purchased the part on their card their address, i used the certificate.
also im trying to decide a paint scheme when i get ready to yank out the motor.
i have to get a new oil pan too
some jackass before me jacked up the car by the oil pan.
anyways what about this.(side note engine bay will be black and so will the car. its getting painted again.)
deep blue oil pan
black block
deep blue cylinder heads & lower intake
black valve covers & plenum
or i could inverse that.
black oil pan
deep blue block
black heads & lower intake
deep blue valve covers & a two tone plenum of blue and black.
any opinions?
