i was thinking that it had been sitting so long that the cylinders themselves have rusted and pitted to the point that it has all sorts of blowby and almost no compression internally.

Do you know that cam? Are you sure they didn't put a non HO 302 cam in it which would have the other firing order. Just to be sure, I would try them both....never know.

 

the cam was reused from original motor before it was rebearinged so it cant be wrong.
