AOD rebuild or swap
Hey guys, just wondering what slushbox everyone is runnin with what kind of results. This car is my sons future first car, well after I have my fun at the track. I'm not sure if I want to keep the AOD and rebuild it (myself if its not too complicated) or swap it out for some other, better trans. I'd like to stay with the auto but, well I know what kind of shananicans I pulled with my dads standard shift camaro, so I'd like to limit that crap. Thanks in advance for any info.

id keep the AOD, but you said track..road or drag? If drag keep it. Its very consistant, just dont forget to get a 3k T converter, shift kit, and heavy duty clutches if its a rebuild. this is what i have and i hits nice, chirps 1st into 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd gear,... F'Yeah... Make sure you have 3.73's or higher gears. Good top end too, Gears are taller than the t-5's.

both trannies are 1:1 in highest gear b4 OD
both are about the same in OD (.67 V .68)
i hate AOD's and i am gonna say treat it like you were walking down the MLK blvd.... RUN !!!!!
i have owned 2 aod cars and both were horrible. i rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt some more. they are about $1800 a pop if atrans shop does it, and even with good parts... they dont always hold up.
no other swap is very practical since the the conversion kits are in the $1000 dollar range
absolute must-haves for an AOD car:
3k stall (stallion from precision) if it's less than $500 it's junk
good clutches and steels (redlines)
"a" servo
oil cooler
shift kit
i also think you should swap 1st and 2nd to the aod-e spec'd gears
1st jumps from 2.40 to 2.84, and 2nd goes from 1.47 to 1.55
do all that and you'll only be about 1/2 second slower than a t5 car built the same way.
just my $.02, i broke all those AOD's in 14 second cars too......

my car came factory with an aod. I had to have it rebuilt 3 times and then that was it, i swapped it to a t-5 and i love it! i know you said you wanted auto but thats my .02! plus in my situation we rebuild our t-5's ourselves so it doesnt cost us much when we explode them.

I didnt like my AOD untill i installed a perfromance Valvebody from silverfox performance.
Shifts are very fast now compared to stock, and will chirp tires easily on shifts.

Next mod is a stall.. like the op said, around a 3000 stall will be nice. getting mine from here, dont cheap out on a B&M, transgo, or any other $300 stall you will be dissapointed.

I also suggest more gear, im running 4.10's, and love them.

Thanks for all the responses, I'm still on the fence about which way to go. I'd love the stick shift for myself, but I've got to keep in mind my son will be rocckin theis car in a few years. I may go with the t-5 swap, its just all new to me and I'm not real certain on what parts swap with what and what parts need to be upgraded and so on. That and I've never driven anything with any REAL horsepower other than my dodge cummins. lol
