What are you goals? Thinking about boost down the road? If your just looking for a nice daily driver with a little more power than stock the Gt40 heads are fine with a good exhaust to open everything up. If you dont mind spending a little more, After market heads will get you even more power. Just depends on what kind of a car your trying to build and your budget.

Just a daily driver, it's a conv so I don't want to drag it but I want it to have some (more) power and have it sound like a real hot rod. I want it to be natural aspirated so I don't want to put a blower on it. Gt40's are within my budget and I should stay with the 1.6 rockers? I will get the 1.6 rollers but I was also lookin at the 1.7's to get more valve clearance but they stated that the 1.7's were good for cobras and stroker motors. To keep it simple stupid shall I stay with the 1.6 rollers? I don't want to have too much lobe separation so that I don't lose my bottom end.

What kind of exhaust manifold should I put on? Also I want to keep my cats because I live in California, but I do have an xpipe that's in the trunk of my 88 lx. I could make a swap before the smog.

Nothing wrong with GT40 heads. 1.6 rockers are good! I went with BBk Exhaust products. Go with full lenth headers. High flow cat X or y pipe (has smog pump connection) and a 2.5 inch cat back and you should have quite a bit more power than stock and still be legal in your state. Just make sure mods are 50 state legal before you buy them.

Are the full length headers the same as the long tubes?

Unfortunately the long tube BBK is not legal in Cali. The ford racing ones are. Ford Racing also has shorty headers. Would they be able to be a direct bolt on so I wouldn't have to use my x pipe? Or is OE the unequal length headers? Anywhoo, after doing all this research and talking to "others" I might as well wait till my engine blows so I can do the rings and the crankshaft bearings all together before I do anything else. Thanks for your help fellas.

Unequal and equal length headers are direct bolt in for stock length mid-pipe(X or H). The equal length headers have more tubing and therefore take up more room in the engine bay. Long tubes can not be used with a stock length mid-pipe.
