Of course Ford (or any smart auto building firm) will not fully max out a NEW engine design on first go-round. How else do they have room to grow without reinventing the wheel every time?

My guess is they will add direct inject to the next gen of GT500. Take the 5.0 liter, add direct inject, add super charge you will most likely easily hit 550+ flywheel HP. Or they may simply drop in the 6.2L

Oh well. If anyone is really that worried about it, don't buy the 2011, 2012, or even the 2013 mustang. Wait of the newly revised model to come out...of course then there will be something else waiting in the wing so you'll have to wait, again...

The 5.0 Coyote has SO much more potential. I am sure that it will replace the 5.4L or it will become the new base for a larger displacement engine.
Bore out and stroke a Coyote, and add DI as well as forced induction (supercharger of EcoBoost), and you will have one damn fast Coyote, even one pumping out 600+ advertised crank BHP.

Fun Fact:
2011 Chevy Camaro direct injected v6 = 312 HP and 29 MPG
2011 Ford Mustang fuel injection v6 = 305 HP and 31 MPG

I have no doubt that if the 3.7L 'Stang were DI, it will be making no less than another 20 crank BHP.
And none the less, since it is VCT DOHC, which the Chevy is not, those attributes could further add to that 31MPG, to maybe 33MPG?

GM wants to hold onto push rods, but if they went to more direct control with DOHC and independent variable cam phasing timing, they too could bust 30MPG. And the DI they already have, it would surpass Ford's non-DI.

Basically, Chevy put on DI to help their CAFE requirements and they don't need DI if they went DOHC and independent variable cam phasing timing. And if they want more fuel economy, cylinder deactivation on top of all that.

Fuel economy in this case is not just the addition of DI, it is also what other technology you have to add to it.

Even still, that fact that ford is able to make a more impressive hp/mpg ratio without using the "next generation" DI technology show how water OP's link holds.

True that.

And come to think of it, this is one reason why Ford did not put EcoBoost (DI & turbo) on the '11 Coyote & 3.7L engines. It would have been TOO CLEAN and the hippie scum buckets would have cried "SEE! They CAN make way cleaner cars right now!" and they would have paid off politicians to make next year's EPA laws even way more stringent than it is scheduled to be.

This is exactly the way I see things as well. The last thing you need to do is to make the engine too efficient so that more stringent laws get put in place tying you hands back even further. (This is more likely a scenario with a liberal congress and President) Like Hannibal Smith always does, plan ahead for anything and as the Boy Scouts of America's motto, be prepared.. There is no doubt Ford will be squeezing more out of this coyote as needed until Chevy or Dodge comes out with something better, faster and more efficient. The only caveat is if GM listens to Obama's car czar's advice and releases their "super efficient engine", they have up their sleeve, then Ford will have to do the same and this time they are prepared. I just pray we get these fools out of the White House for numerous reasons.. But one of those reasons would be to keep Government control (CAFE standards etc) from ballooning out of control.
