thx AzPete - i also found this diagram from the allfordmustangs forum skip shift thread. part of my problem is not being on a lift but rather just on ramps so i'm not in an optimal position to move around. i could also do to have a good mirror to stick up in there to get a good 'lay of the land' view of what i'm up against. this reminds me of trying to change the oil pressure sending unit on a tahoe i once owned. fought if for several hours before i gave up and had the dealer do it. still don't know how they got their hands on it!!. i'll give it the old college try again when i'm doing my next oil change. did i mention i hate skip shift?
You are driving like it should be driven....wait, it will get you at the worst time and you will look at the shifter and wonder if you forgot where 2nd is.....lol
I seriously doubt that since I think it has to do with the economy end of the Mustang rating. It is actually hard to hit if you are trying and the speed must be just right. It normally caught me in traffic on a right hand turn.........forced to drive easy based on traffic.

maybe im missing something,,,
but what does it physically do?
if you're driving in 1st really slow, but raise the rpms high enough to shift to 3rd smoothly it shuts you out of 2nd gear for a moment or what?

Driving around up to 17 mph in first, with a gentle/slow acceleration to get there, and you attempt to shift to 2nd, it will force you into 4th. The car can handle it but it is sluggish. When it happened to me, I just thought I missed 2nd in a new car. Then I read up on it and just decided to unplug the solenoid on the transmission so I did not have to mess with it. It gives an indication on the cluster when it has the solenoid activated.
Driving fast/hard will go right past it and you won't even see the cluster info.
