Default 3.90 gear.....

Why is this ratio not popular?

I know FR does not offer it, is there a reason? I'm doing bolt-ons to my '13 GT and struggling with what gear to go with.
I was seriously considering the 4.10's but first gear ratio seems pretty short & I've read where some guys say it's almost useless with the 4.10.

I'll be running drag radials at the strip and sometimes on the street

Not much interstate driving at all, mostly in town & playing.

A 3.90 seems like a good compromise.

Thanks,
Dan

Because Motive is the only company that makes them I believe, and they suck. LOL

Seriously though, 3.73 would be the highest I'd go with a manual. Unless you plan to launch in 2nd gear.

Even with 3:73's 1st gear is pretty much there just to get you moving. I have wondered how many people with 3:37's start out in 2nd?

I sometimes start in 2nd. Have to really think about it though. Second nature to start in first. Doesn't feel too hard on the clutch or anything

I can tell from my experience you can definately go to low. I did, throwing 3.31's back in her. From everyone I talk to at the track. 3.73's make first useless with decent power. but are close to what you want if staying N/A lightly modded. 3.55's boosted seems good until about 750ish hp then again first is useless and your close to redlining 4th at the 1/4. I am gonna try 3.31's on my setup and make a decision if I need lower.

as far as 3.90 being unpopular. Ford Racing doesnt offer that ration and motive is known to have gear whine/noise so most just choose the better for Mustang, Ford Racing gears.

I have 4.10s in my manual and love it. First is almost useless. I do start in 2nd a lot though. When at the drag strip, I do my burnout in 2nd gear and I will bounce off the rev limiter instantly in 1st! Then, thru the timing lights, I am shifting in 5th which kills me.

I plan to get the Roush SC this spring and will go to 3.55s so I am staying in 4th thru the timing lights.
