The car audio shop down the street from me told me they mount headunits in all different directions. They put alot into center consoles facing up so it will be no problem. Ill try and take some pics and post them when I get it built.
DOH!.....[slapping forehead] i've seen this done in numerous cars too.....forgot though......my bad

We enjoy tubin here in AZ in the summer to escape the desert heat. I bought a cheap $20 radio from target and threw some screws through the lid into the speaker portion of the radio. I have had endless fun with it since as it has lasted 3 yrs now. You get a good reaction when you reach over and throw the lid back as everyone expects it to fall off. There was another time when we were driving in my ranger and it was in the bed. The top of it stuck just far enough over the top that it looked like I had just thrown it in on there and forgot. After 7 hrs of driving we counted 19 people(and one polite CHP) that tried to get our attention to tell us the radio was gonna fall off(one guy fer 10 mins!). A family in a sedan pulled up to pass me and I noticed the woman laughing. The slowed down and got behind me in while still in the other lane. When they pulled up to pass me again they had a camera and were all laughing as I am sure they all thought the same as the others. I started swerving a bit and you could tell they were amazed it stayed on...

I have been installing stereos for over a decade professionally now and my advice, KISS- KEEP IT SIMPLE.............STUPID. If the radio gets dumped, I am out $20 and 5 mins and this still allowes full use of the cooler!
