jl audio xr
mb quart premium (might have to shop around)
focal polykevlar (might have to shop around)

Being in the back of the car, you are hit with stronger accoustic vibrations. Added onto the fact that your left knee won't be blocking the driver side subwoofer. Naturally it'll be louder.
Overall you are indeed best to just rip it out and start over, depending on what you desire from your sound. Personally I don't take music lightly, I am a huge fan of music. Both the art of creating and simply listening. So when I listen to it I need to feel it.

Previous system was Planet Audio carbon Z series subs, 600 watts. But getting anew. I ended up buying dual kicker 12" L7s powered by a hifonics brutus amplifier (some of the best quality amps!). 2000w monoblock. Run it parallel for 1K to each L7. A little over suggested RMS but honestly Kickers are inefficient subs and can take the power without damage. I chose them for that reason. They hit hard, yet have a "muddy" signature. So I can have both a low rumble and a fast-hitting punch all from the same sub.

hifonics defenitly kicks some major ***! my setup for just the sub is: 0 guage wiring power and ground to amp, hifonics brutus 2005d amp rated at 1500w rms 3000w max. 1 10" alpine type X subwoofer rated at 1000w rms 3000w max. I have the amp set a 4ohms 4 the sub so the amp never ever ever gets eeven warm. Bench tested im putting out 1300w rms n 3000max. ITS AMAZING!

im sry, but i just felt compelled to respond to this.

a)the back seat is actually one of the locations of LEAST resonance, as it is the most wide-open space in the car. the most resonance will be in the corners of the trunk and the corners of the dash (wonder why dbdrag/iasca/etc put their mic on the windshield?). the cause of "more" loudness in the back seat is a product of cancellation in the front seat due to a sub in the front door and a sub in the trunk playing the same note, with their sound waves hitting at different intervals and causing canellation.

b)your left knee will make minimal dampening effect on a wavelength of 32 feet . that is only true for higher frequencies from a midbass driver that blocking its path will make a significant difference (some? of course. very noticeable? not really.)

c)l7s are amazing spl woofers for the average person, and hifonics makes some awesome *cheap* amps. hifonics brutus/zeus/atlas/etc are no where near the best quality amps. they serve a purpose: get you their advertised rms power for cheap and with decent clarity, but all of those are compromises of each other, and it is apparent when you sit them next to a genuine *high end* amp.

d)"muddy" has more to do with the install and tuning than the sub. i can make a 6.5in speaker get almost as loud as a 10in sub, but sound like absolute crap doing so.

Why is the bass so loud in the back if there is no subs back there?

ooops...that was assuming having a subwoofer in the trunk. still, the corners of the trunk *should* be louder than the middle of the back seat even if the subs are in the front doors, because the sound waves pressurize and resonate more there.

So there really are no subs in the back with the shaker 500?

Well yes, I should've pointed that out. For the price Hifonics is great. I can list a couple companies that make superior products... but they come with a superior price! Obviously competition quality equipment will reign all. Just that not everybody wants to fork over the necessary dough. But in their price range they are close to top of the class, giving the teacher an apple even.

And muddy is just how I think Kickers sound personally. Airtight AE box even. They eat up all the juice you can toss them but are also inefficient. But for those that like that low muddy booming rumble it's their dream. Others want a very sharp precise mule kick, usually those who listen to Metallica and Slayer to just obliterate their insides with killer double bass action. But I know if I have adequate setups, one Kicker and one... say... Rockford. RF will have a crisper sound.

For the sub I assumed front doors only. If we are also talking about trunk subs also then I retract previous statement. Must've misinterpreted the question.
