Replaced Speakers
Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice on this thread. I replaced the shaker 500 w/ an Eclipse head unit on Sat and wow what a huge difference in sound!!! It's like night and day!! Crisp, clear sound and loud too. Paired with polk audio's all the way around and a sub in the trunk, I am happy!!! For those looking for better sound, start w/ getting rid of that shaker 500 first!!!! You will hear the difference!
It's like when I used to work at Circuit City (key word: used to, they're not that organized so I's outta there). I made a display for them after a trip to Pick-N-Pull. I gutted a Honda Civic stock radio and speakers. Hooked them up to the audio wall.
Our wall worked like this. There's a red button. Hit that button and that item wired to it is activated. Many of us have been to CC or BB so such places any ways. So people can swap out amps and speakers to find the set they like the best.
I would start with stock equipment, move to a new head unit, move to new pair of speakers, then add in a multi-channel amp. And then right back to stock so they could re-live what the beginning sound was. It was a progressive movement to show the quality of improvement in the sound. To demonstrate exactly what they were getting. And ya know what? I sold a hell of a lot of items that way.
Same thing in this very situation. A stock radio on average has about 7w per channel. Shaker500 I'm not sure, haven't looked it up. Though that is what I have right now (in process of completely gutting the system and adding in new goodness
). But you go from that to a new headunit, JVC, Pioneer, Eclipse... your choice. They tend to be about 20-25w per channel. Major improvement! Higher volumes will end up being louder, and much cleaner. And again when you add a multi-channel amp to your polks, which I am going to go off top of my head and guesstimate they are capable of taking a good 100w each! You add in an amp that can feed them that juice, 100w/chan and you will see another drastic improvement!
All depends on what you want, how you use your equipment, and of course your budget.
