Default Shaker 500 problems

I have a shaker 500 system in my 2005. I have had ithe car since last november and have had no problems with it. I just recently have had a problem with it reading burned disks, and now it won't read a burned mp3 disk at all. I called up the dealer to see if i could get it looked at and i was informend that ford won't cover any repairs to it because i am not suppost to be putting burned disks into it. The manager told me that they were too thin and they shouldn't play in the player anyways. But i have been listing to them for months now. Is this guy right, or is he pulling me around?

You may want to call him back and ask him where you buy disks with mp3's on them to play in the car
When he says he doesn't know, explain that the _only_ way to get a disk with mp3's on it is to burn it. Therefore if the cd player won't play burned disks, it doesn't play mp3's. Then drive over and point to the mp3 logo printed on the stereo[&o]

Logic for the win, every time.

Outside of that, is this a CD-RW (you can erase it and record again, it will say "CD-RW" on the label)? If so that explains your issue. Not all cd drives can read those, only CD-RW drives can usually read them. Even if the cd player plays them, after a few rewrites they go bad despite what the propaganda says.

The ink used on them is incompatible with about half the readers out there and requires a special laser. Try a normal CD-R on it. If that doesn't work, try getting Memorex CD-R's labeled as being for music. The cheaper CD-Rs always seem to have issues playing in some stereos for me. The backing on them is shoddy, they are thinner, and don't seem to burn right a lot of the time.

I have a post production studio, burn a lot of disc's and the Memorex CD-R "Music" discs have yet to fail me. They are a little thicker and have a good quality medium on them. Also remember that the medium on CD-R disks is on the surface of the dull side, so any scratch on that side destroys them. To find out if it's scratched, hold it between your eyes and a bright light. If it's pitted or scratched that may be the issue. It only takes a few microns to wreck them so you need to be careful with them. Pits will look like holes and be readily apparent with a bright light on the other side of the disk.

Unless you handle them extremely carefully they don't last very long. Leaving them in the sun will kill them very quickly as the plastic is very sensitive to UV.

ok kool. I will do that. I asked him origanally and he said that some dvds have mp3s on them. I knew that he was blowin smoke. I will deal with him later. As far as the disk, i am using both cd-rw's and cd-r's. And i am having problems with both of them. The disks are perfect too. Just burned them not too long ago. And i am using memorex. So i think that my head unit is just taking a dump on me.

I thought it had more to do with the type of label that was on the disk. It it was a paper sticker type it messed up the transport mechanism er something like that.

You can have mp3 encoded dvd's.

I did burn a disc of mp3's (old school metal like acdc, zeppelin, sabbath) and it played with no problems.

bari,
Do commercially pressed cds work?

You might want to clean the read laser on it as well. It's possible it's just got dust on it or something. That can cause unreliable playback on any cd reader. I have no idea what the recommended cleaning process on the shaker is tho. I'd be cautious about using whatever is at the checkout in the music store. I'm gonna ask the dealer what they recommend.

I looked this stuff up in the manual and under "CD Player Care", they describe how to handle and clean cd's correctly! That's kind of retarded, since it has nothing to do with cd player care. That should be titled "CD Care".
Then in bold it says:
"CD units are designed to play commercially pressed 4.75 in (12cm) audio compact discs only. Due to technical incompatibility certain recordable and re-recordable discs may not function correctly when used in Ford CD players. "

Double talk. The first sentence says that only prerecorded cd's you buy will work. The second sentence says some recorded cds may not work, which implies that some will. Which is it?

My guess these certain discs happen to be whatever doesn't work in an individual's player, who has called the dealer to find out why they won't work. Convenient eh? They shy away from telling you exactly what will work. Ford needs to be a little more solid on what works and not be writing loopholes into the manual. That's a little weak... They should list the makes and part numbers of cd-r's that will work.

They offer no cleaning recommendation for the lens. It would suck to use a "cleaning disc" and have it get stuck in the player. A google search on cleaning the lens was fruitless.

Anyone ever try cleaning this or know how to do it?

There is a TSB that covers this problem. I had the same problem with mine. It would not read burned disks and would skip alot. It also would cut off the end of songs by 3 seconds or so. My car was still under factory warranty and I had it replaced for free.

I can email the TSB if you'd like.

I would appreciate the tsb on this problem. I got in my car this morning and the damn thing decided it would read the same disk that it wouldn't read last week. Stupid crap. Anyways, i want to get it fixed while it is still under warrenty. An e-mail with the tsb would be good. i want to rub it in the guys face that said there wasn't one
