I bet that was some muddy, nasty, loud bass. With the setup you mentioned you would still have a lot of cancellation, but if it works, it works. Maybe you got lucky and the differnt box sizes created some harmonics that allowed the bass frequencies to resonate.

I would still much rather have 4 12's cone out in a nice box.
