Default Two decks?

Hey. This is my first post. I have a 1996 Mustang. It has the basic sound system but also has some extra things. It has the deck from the Mach 460 sound system as well as another deck below that. The top one has all the controls and display panel and a cd player (that doesnt work.. at all). the bottom one has a cd player (that doesnt work.. at all) and a display screen that doesnt work. The buttons dont light up on the bottom one either. It seems to be completely inactive. However, when I pull out the bottom one there are 2 things plugged into it. when I unplug them the spealkakers dramatically drop in volume. Is it some sort of amp?. I talked to a neighbor that has a 95 stang with the 460 and he has the same deck on top and instead of the bottom deck he has a storage area. I asked him and he said he has the 2 lose wires just lying back behind he deck and also mentioned hissystem "isnt working any more"

Im really just wondering what is hooked up in my car. please help. thanks.

If it does not work at all then i would say blown fuse. but it could ust be a dead radio. ? just go with an aftermarket headunit.

I figured out a little more. The top unit is the head unit from a 97 mach 460. the bottom is the optional cd player from the basic system. When my car was built i assume it had the top unit with the tape player and the bottom unit with cd player. when I bought the car the previous owners said they had to put a new head unit in. The old one was the one with the tape player.. which they replaced with the mach 460 unit(probably found it in a junk yard). Since they did that.. the top unit (the 460 unit) didnt have a built in amp so they had to leave the bottom one in (which is why there are now 2 cd players). I can listen to the radio just fine. The top one is completely functional except for the cd player... and i guess the bottom one is just acting as an in dashamp.. with no other functions. Does this sound like it makes any sense? Will this make itany mroe difficult toput in a new head unit (which i haventdone before). Thanks again.

it will not make it harder just buy the all the right plugs and it will be fine. + the amp is located under the radio, i thought it was a computer the 1st time i saw it but i just put in a new headunit and sold all of that old stuff online.

the amp WAS located under the radio, remember those plugs you found? I recently stripped my mach 460(tape deck) from my 94 gt and it was in perfect working order. I can hook you up with the amp for shipping a couple of $$$ for gas to the post office if ya want.
