Default Boxes

How do the sealed, ported, etc. boxes differ? I may be looking into buying some here soon. I would like my subs to "punch" instead of the deep vibrating bass. Currently I have 2 10" in a ported bandpass but they dont punch very well.

sealed usually gets the best punch out of subs but it depends on the subs and power. you can make a ported box have good punch too. you should really have a custom box made just for you subs instead of buying one because there are very crappy boxes out there. just about any good stereo shop should be able to make you a box.

A ported box is usally mated with special speakers, So a sealed Box is what you most likely want..... For a 10" woffer you need a box with 1.0-1.5 cubic feet, so you will need either two seperate "1.0+ cubic feet" boxes, or one "2.0+ cubic foot" box that is divided inside......

actually that isnt very correct, there are some subs that take just sealed boxes and some that only take ported but alot take both. and 1.0-1.5 for a 10" is very bold to say i can think of about 10 subs that take a box under .5 cubes and in that big of box you would loose power handeling and damage the sub. but also there are some 10"s that will take 2.5 cubes sealed. thats why you need a custom box built for your subs and not just a pre fabbed.

Well and that comes down to the db rating of the sub, I realize that most new subs are only 85-90 db so ya you could go smaller, but my 12" woffers are 96db, so I am going to need about 2.0 cubic feet per woffer, to get the best s/q out of them.... I also have the advantge of having a carpenter for a dad, so I am making the box to my specs and so its completely weged in the back of my hatch.....

you have to take into more consideration then the DB rating for determining the box size you have to use the whol T/S specs. what subs do you have ill see what size box they need.

those subs shouldnt be used for car audio and they are some of the worst responses i have ever seen. they would actually work better for for range i think but for sealed they should have .68 cubes so you dont over excurt them. and for ported 1.16 tuned to 48hz. actually those things are only designed for home audio and they are more of a mid then a sub. it only has 2.5mm xmax which is very very low. you might want to try some differnt subs.
