Eldest Boy's friend just got back from zoomie boot camp, apparently you still lay on the concrete at Lackland to learn how to shoot rifles. The weapons change but apparently not much else. Pop-in-law told me about doing the same thing (with M1s and M2s) way back in '49.

Vacation was good. Back to work tomorrow.

I was there 20 years later in 69 (that's right..69). Yep, it was just like real combat. Handed us an M-16, told everyone to button the top button of your shirt, turn up your collar and turn you cap backwards to keep hot brass from your neighbor from going down your collar. I think we went through about four or five magazines and were ready to take on the commies.
