Default 1965 mustang 289

Okay, i have not yet purchased my mustang but i am working towards the final steps. I have a problem, the car i want to buy does not have the motor in it yet, so i could have the option of doing what i wanted to it. It has a 289 2v motor but i want a bit more power than that. My brother has a pair of some Cast iron GT heads for a small block ford, so i could have those for free. I ideally want around 350-400 hp, what will it take to get me there? I pondered the idea of a 302 roller block with those GT heads, and then having them gasket ported. i also am not sure if i would rather keep the 289 or go to a 302. I am also open to the idea of getting a 302 with some AFR 165 heads but they seem to be almost 1500 bucks youch. And i am assuming the 289 is a non-emissions motor, so if i went to a late model 302, would i have to have some emission things hooked up if i used the GT or AFR heads?

ANY HELP IS Greatly appreciated!!!!

EDIT:

I want this to be a honda spanker, reliable turn key car. and i would like it to idle nice in traffic, so if i cannot reach 400 hp and idle in traffic, then i will have to settle for less HP

Well, since money is not a problem....I'd get a 302 and stroke it to the 347 everyone else loves so much. That should get you in the ballpark. It will also get you more torque than the 289 or 302. What are "cast iron GT heads"?

oh, and.....welcome.

probably the GT40 heads ...
i'd say as well the easiest way in that region is to stroke. nice set of heads on top and you should have 350TQ/HP+ (matched heads intake/cam/carb)
problem though that the rest of the driveline behind it might fall apart

btw try the technical classic mustang forum. this is general discussion so you might get more replies/info over there

Eagan_MN, let me know if you decide to not use the 289. I'm looking for '65 model year 289 with a build date of late '64.

I have a 65 with a 5.0 from a 96' GT (or so the guy says) it also has the 5 speed in it. the only other things I can see is headers, H pipe, flowmasters....from what I can tell i'm around 325 - 350 hp. I would think with the heads u have and a little work 400 should be doable. by the way mine idles very smooth, of course i have a big carb insted of the fuel injection but it runs very smooth I really love the roller
