Default Oil pump question

I know there are high pressure pumps and High volume pumps. If the journals in a 302 are not changed and you install a High volume, how can that help you? The standard journals are only going to handle a typ flow. Unless the new pump can move more oil without a rise in pressure which I can't see how without a change in the journals.

I put a high volume pump on a std clearance engine and blew the filter off within a week. I idled at 40psi and went to 125psi at 3,000rpm. I removed the crank and had it turned down to widen the clearance. It's about .0015 wider than std. It idles at 20psi and goes to 80psi at 3,000 now. The wider clearance sometimes makes a knocking sound until oil pressure comes up.

I've always run high volume on my rebuilds and never had a problem. It will still pump more volume that a stock one.

I think you're talking about a HIGH pressure.. Then what you said would make sense, I don't think a high volume would do that. Not sure, that's why I posted this thread. I would like to install a new pump when I tear down the engine this fall, I'm not sure what to use in the way of an upgrade.

I seem to always answer my own question eventually.. Here is a article on High flow and High Pressure that brakes it down Oil Pumps. Looks like I'm going with a High Flow......
