Default Sloppy Shifting-Second Try

I made a thread in the general discussion area about my toploader tranny being very sloppy. I recently found out that its a 1970 RUG-AV1 Toploader. So, my question comes to the classic section of the forums. Any shifter kit that you guys have used that can help me get this toploader tranny to shift alot tighter and shorter?

You need a Hurst competition plus shifter and associated mounting kit. The shifter is aroud 280 @ Summit and the mounting kit is about 89.

Make sure you get the correct kit, or you will have to drop the rear of the tranny and bolt it on and adjust, and take it off and send it back, and order another one and bolt it on, and adjust and take it off, and send it back and order another one and bolt it on and adjust and take it off and send it back and PULL your FREAKING hair out.

After 3 times it is really old. Apparently a 65 Fairlane big block tailshaft can bolt on to a Toploader and when you decode it you won't notice that odd little difference.

THEN, when you think it is all good, you might drive a few miles and shatter a few bearing and gear parts. After that you might say EFF This and put a TKO 500 in it and it is all good.

Ask me how I know.........

I don't know if it is the same as what I have, but I put a kit in it that had the rubber bushings, bolts, and such that went on the actual shifter where it connects to the linkage. It tightened it up a lot.

There is that option, a shifter rebuild kit. Way cheaper (25+/-). Depends upon your useage. If you speed shift much or want to then the Husrt is a lot better. If you drive normal ( I do not) then you don't need one.

I second the motion on the Hurst Competition Plus shifter. You can get the entire kit from Texas Mustang for 349.95. I would first give them a call to make sure it is the right application for you. http://www.texasmustang.com

350 bux to make a stick easier to push...ehhh. I may just go looking for a shifter rebuild kit. I know that wont shorten the throw, but it should stiffen it up a little right? Have any suggestions on the rebuild kit and where to find one? Thanks again all.
