ORIGINAL: blue66stang

I just bought a 1966 coupe with an inline 6 in it. The top speed and acceleration are no where NEAR where i want it. does anyone have some ideas of what i can do to it without going broke in the process or dropping a v8 in it?
i currently have a 68 with the 200 cid, and looked at converting to an 8. alot involved especially with the 200, spindles, suspension tranny, i think even the mounts on the 200 are off. i just sucked it up and went for show. Mine has never been rebuilt yet, and i think once i do that i should get a little more power for cruisin'.

I'm not sure how much power it would add but the coolness factor is OFF the cart in my opinion. A tri-carb set up 3 2 barrel weber's. Do a google search on that and a split header for dual exhaust. Price might be a bit steep but it keeps the #'s matching and I think it would be way cool to see at a show.

Money is tight but I did all the research on this and tried saving but kids sucked the funds up, otherwise I was gonna do this to my 66 convt.

Yes it's not a v-8 but speed isn't what I was going for I have another car for speed and I'm waiting to get my dad's Boss 302 if he'll ever sell it to me

If you want to hop up the six cylinder I say have fun with it. 200CID will limit you to 200-275 horses, but they may be all you want. These guys were around when I had a 6cyl Chevy in the early 70's. They are still making hopups for the 6's.

blue 66- i had a i6 in my last car. i had the dual header from clifford performance and had 40s dump before the axle. it sounded just like a v8. most people couldnt tell. get the pertronix kit for the distributor. mustangs plus also offers a air cleaner assembly to put a open 14" k&n on top to fit the carb. back in the day i just made one. clifford also has a modified head so you can put 3 single or dual carbs on top. ive broken a few motor mounts doing brake stands so dont think thats a weak engine. inline engines have great torque. thats why dodge still has the i6 cummins. bad *** power.

You can make some serious hp with a 6 but its gonna cost ya. Its far less expensive to swap in a good V-8. I have raced Ford 240ci cyl. enigines in the past, but it was because of class restrictions. To really make the power you need serious head work, headers, good 4 bbl intake and cam work, high compression, good ignition, etc. We were able to compete with V-8 cars, but had over $3,000. just in the head, and that was to compete with V-8 cars restricted to 2 bbl carb and no head mods. V-8 power is definitely the way to go for economical hp.
