i thought someone mighta timed it with the vaccum advance hooked up....that could cause it

Is your engine running poorly when you turn off the ignition? If so it is called "dieseling" and you have a timing concern. If it is running fine when you cut off the switch I suggest you buy a wiring diagram and eliminate circuits one at a time, trust me electricity is only hard if you make it hard.
