Default 65 Water Pump Confusion

I just inherited a pristine, mostly restored '65 from my Dad and I'm assuming the restoration fun on it. It has a leaky water pump that I'm confused about what to replace it with, to be true to the "original". The car is a 289, V8, 2V, C-Code from NJ, produced in Aug '65. Yet the leaky pump it now has on it is a C5AE-8505C casting, which I believe was used on the 4V hi-performance models.

Could someone please point me to information regarding the various water pumps used on which engine configurations in the '65 timeline? Also, what is the "L-8" modification that I've seen mentioned within that time frame?

Thanks in advance.

Several things come to mind. Most likely the water pump you now have on the car is not the original. They generally dont last 40 years. So comparing it to a replacement pump may not be of use as far as the part number goes. The casting number you posted is the 3rd version of the '65 style water pump, as the 'C' after the part number denotes this. I am not detailed enough to claim that the hipo pumps were or were not different from a C code 289 pump, hopefully someone else here could answer that for you.

I think the A code means fairlane which lots of mustang parts came from.
