OK, I think I have a good track on fixing my rear end, looking for some opinions still. None of the shops here in Monterey are very reasonable on labor, but they do very good work. They want $400 for labor to rebuild the third member and replace axel bearings/oil seal plus about $400-500 for parts.
Thanks

Big Nate
For what that place was asking, you could have bought a new Aluminum 3rd member from Currie(advertised to be stronger than stock FORD 8" iron case), gears, and installation. The 3rd member for around $300 with 2.80 gears should do just fine.

I got 2 quotes from Currie. $1080 for a 3.55 posi and $680 for a 3.55 open with a standard case fully assembeled 3rd member. I would have a ton more confidence in a Currie, but geez what a price difference.

if I was near all my extra cars I would just send you a 3.00 geared open rear and call it a gift. Since they are 10 hours away, I cant. It shouldnt be too tough to find a used one, call around to junkyards and see if they have any mavericks or granada type cars that have a V8 in them. Even some trucks had 8" rears in them with 6 cylinders. All you need is the center section, not the entire rear end.

If I can find an old friend of mine I will see if I can find one.
