I have used the orange silicon, spread very thin on both sides with good success. Clean both metal surfaces with brake cleaner and rag before application.

with a gasket you shouldnt have to use sealer on all of it. The edges where it meets the oil pan and around the water outlets are the only places I put it. I prefer Ultra Black, use it sparingly, not a huge glop of it. Whatever squishes out does so on both sides. A quick way to spin a bearing is to have some get into the pan then go through the oil system.

Orange works okay too, so does blue. Black seems to hold the longest and clean up easiest. All you need is a thin layer of it spread around the cover then the gasket applied over it. I dont reccomend putting it on the block, its easier to clean the cover then the block with the engine in the car.

I used the orange on mine with no worries. But, like the postbefore, use it sparingly. I dab and smear to get a smooth even, thin coat. Good luck.
