Default Pic of engine finished, but rough idle...

I finally got the engine finished and running with the "LeMans" solid lifter camshaft. I decicded to go with Comp Cams Magnum rocker arms (1:6 ratio) which have a roller tip. Below is a picture of the finished product with the Air cleaner off.

I'm having a problem with the engine now, and have a possible solution, but am eager to hear if others have a better (cheaper) idea. The cam seems a LOT hotter than I was initially lead to believe. The car drives smoothly and runs great when going down the road, but it has a rather rough idle. It is tuned as best as possible and I have the idle adjusted low enough so the engine doesn't sound like its running too fast, but high enough so it won't stall while idling. The only problem is when shifting from neutral (Park) to drive, the drag is too much on the engine and it stalls. If I crank up the idle far enough to keep it from stalling when shifting it into gear, it sounds WAY TOO FAST when in neutral or park. My idea is simply to swap out the auto for a "Top-Loader" 4 speed which will solve the problem and increase the pleasure of driving . . . from my humble perspective. Any takers on other solutions? I thought of a higher stall speed torque convertor, but I think it will still create the same drag when shifting into gear and wouldn't fix the problem.

Whats the lift? What stall convertor do you have? im thinkin the convertor might help it. Need a lil bit more info.

Nice job on that engine compartment! I too have a newly rebuilt engine w/ larger cam and have not yet found that sweet spot where idle is low enough, yet won't stall out at stop lights. I think I have it close though. Also, just swapped out the C4 for a Toploader and man do I dig it! However it was not as easy a swap as I had imagined. Also cost more (parts!) then I estimated. But I am very happy w/ it now. It was worth it! Good luck.

Yeah, A higher stall convertor will fix it. Same thing happened to my impala. Put a WAY too big of a cam. It would stall out at red lights and stuff. lol. We put in a higher stall and it fixed the problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a higher stall speed convertor will merely allow the engine to achieve a higher RPM before the convertor stalls and won't let the engine accelerate any further. THis would be helpful if I were to drag race the car since it produces more power, but much higher up the RPM band. I still think it would create the same drag on the engine when shifting into gear and the problem I'm having would not get any better. It would only launch faster, and it's NOT a car built for drag racing.

Trust me. it works. I went through the exact same thing. It creates less drag at the lower RPMS. Allowing the engine to run.

I did not do the swap, but did gather/purchase all the parts needed. I will try to itemize all the costs and will post a bit later. The mechanic who did the swap charged me $600 to take out the 289 (then I took it to a engine builder for rebuild) swap out the C4 and install the Toploader, then reinstall the 289. I was more then thrilled w/ that price, and he did a awesome job including some minor custom stuff. If I had chose to do it myself, it would probably still be in parts in the garage. I prefer to leave the big stuff/projects to those who are more knowledgable, experienced and have the aptitude for it. I am the king of unfinshished projects ( typed as I look out my window at a partially finished privacy fence in my backyard, lol)!

or you could put 1.5 rockers in it so the valve lift isnt so much...but who wants to do that.

nice bay! that is one expensive oil filter you have there. also, where is your fuel filter and bowl?

it looks pretty correct as well regardless of intentions
