In SC you MUST have a title to get tags. You can get a duplicate title. You can also get a "bill of sale". But that only lets you drive until you get your paperwork to the DMV. My title actually had one number off in the VIN. That was fun! I had to trace the fender vin with a pencil rubbing. I also had the data plate tracing. The number that was off was the engine class and I showed them in my restorers guide that part of the code did not exist. I forget what it was exactly. After two days of them searching their records, I was finally able to get my title transferred into the right name and number. Seems they traced it back to 1987 where the error occured. Probably mis-pronounced to a clerk in lovely SC. Don't get me wrong, I love the south, but, people kaint tawk rat! It was a "C", not an "E". I asked for the info they found and they would not give it too me. My car has been rebuilt, restored a couple of lamo attempts in the past and rolled for all I know! I wanted the contacts but could not get them. Oh well.

Hey guys. You may remember my wreck a couple months ago.
Hey Smoyers - I do remember your wreck - ouch! Are you feeling better and all healed up? I remember you saying that your face took a hit on the steering wheel/dash/windshield. [:@] Your wreck, and your story, makes me think twice every time I purchase something cosmetic for the 67, as I continue to think that I should first put in at least a three-point belt system and then discs on all fours...

Seriously - hope you're feeling better.

ok a little off topic, but this has to do with titles. back in the late 70's early 80's my dad bought a 73 mach 1 and restored it, then it was stolen, but he still has the title, so does that mean if he finds it, it is still legally his? or if someone got a new title or salvage title or something for it, who's would it be??

I had to junk a car one time, and the junk yard required that I give them the title, and sign it over to them. However in the case scenario you described, if the car was stolen, and you still had the original title, the car would still be legally yours, no matter what paperwork was done after it was stolen. That is why it is important to have a clean original title.

It will have a title it will just be a salvage title. When a car is totaled by an insurance company and sent to a salvage yard it has to have a salvage title to keep unscrouplous people from repairing them then selling them as undamaged

To answer the question, if I were a buyer, and the owner had a salvage title to go with the car, that would tell me a lot about the past history of the car, and I would probably pass on buying it. So yes, it will hurt sales of the car in the future, but not kill the sales. Some folks don't know the difference. And, if all you want to do is retrieve the car and repair it, and have it for the rest of your life, then it really doesn't matter what title it has, does it?
