Default Starting problem(65' 289 2bbl auto)

Hello there fellows.

The last time I started my 65 289 2bbl was June 2006.

I had put new plug wires, a new starting sellenoid(is that how you spell it?), New cap and rotor, new generator(not alternator), new battery. I haven't had much time since, so the car has been sitting. This morning I tried to start it for the first time and it cranked really strong-like it was about to start. I was surprised it cranked that strong. But it did not start.

I'm a learning rookie when it comes to fixing my mustang. The next diagnose I would make is that my points and or coil are bad. I have no prior experience with testing good or bad points nor do I know how to install them. Another thing, how do I set up the timing, are there various ways to do it? Any insight would be great fellows.

Pour a little gas in the carburator.

Test the points by first getting a good visual of them to see if they are burned. Take the cap off, and rotate the engine until the hub rubs on the points which opens them up all the way. If they look OK, most likely they are. If they look burned and not much metal left, then replace them and the condenser. It's easy enough to see the two set screws that have to be taken off. Next, loosen the two screws that hold the points in the dizzy, and using a feeler gauge, set them to 0.017 by using the tip of a regular screw driver in the slot to move them closed and open. Then tighten them down. Change the rotor while you are at it.
Setting the timing is a lengthy tech question. First go get yourself a decent timing light, then come back on here for an explanation. Without a timing light to look at, the explanation won't make sense to you.

thanks, me and my buddy were observing the points and turned the engine over and the points were sparking. I had changed the rotor too. I really need one of those guns eh? I'll invest in one. We were also looking at the carb, its the original 2bbl carb that was rebuilt a couple months ago. Visually I have a vaccum leak because the plates and gasket between the carb and manifold have a leak. I also obeserved the carb's chamber(without starting it nor pushing on the gas pedal) and I saw that it was just leaking(droplets) of fuel-and i think it has been flooding the cylinders. I don't want to rebuild the thing so I think I might invest in a 4bbl carb and a new intake too. But truthfully, I'm a young college student and I commute via bus to save money and I want my mustang to start when I need to drive it during rainy days. Would a pertonix ignition mess up my engine because everything on that car is original?

A pertronix is not going to mess it up, but If money's tight, then just go with the points. They are reliable. You can also buy a rebuild kit for your carb for about 15 bucks.

truthfully i have never rebuilt a carb before. On a scale of 1 to 10 how difficult is the process.
