Default Auto Choke and Electric cable??

I mentioned that my choke had been causing some grief before. Well its been hot so I haven't worried about it. But this weekend I took the choke apart again to try to get it working.

Some have said that there is supposed to be a wire going to it to provide some power. I just don't see where or why this is needed. There is no cable going to the choke at all nor do I see where a wire would connect or what purpose it would have. Also, my shop manual doesn't mention any wire.

Am I missing something here?

I opened up the choke cover and made sure the coil was on the choke lever properly, tightend it all down again. Tried to make sure the choke coil was adjusted properly. Checked the vacuum tube was connected from the manifold to the choke. and sprayed the hell outa the whole working parts with WD 40.

The adjustment screw seems to be in the right position. And I can manually move the choke positions through their range of motions. But when I close up the choke manually, it won't open when the car warms up. Once I manually open it it stays that way.

Any other ideas?? I might have to bring this one into the shop, I don't know what more to do, and fall is coming and it will get harder to start.

Thanks

You don't have an electric choke. Your choke opens and closes by heat from the manifold heating up that spring. If the spring does not move when it gets hot, then it either is not receiving the hot air from the manifold, or it is binding.

Go Glen! Yup - he's right. If you don't want to deal with the auto choke anymore, just go old-school on the car and put a manual choke conversion on it (any parts store will have this for less than $20). It's kind of fun to have the manual choke, and it really teaches you about your engine - but then again I say this one week before putting an electric choke conversion on mine... [&:]
