I would say heads.

But that is arguable because they may provide only a slight gain in HP unless they are matched with carb and intake and cam so that’s really 4 things in one.

You cant just slap a random set of huge heads on a 289 with a 2v carb, stock cam and expect any real gains. but match that intake, cam and carb to them and you got something.

That's a trick question. There simply is no one upgrade that is not linked to other upgrades.

I'm casting my vote for dual exhaust. You can bolt on all the go-fast goodies you want, but if the engine can't breath well enough (exhale, in this case), you're missing potential. Appropriately sized pipes (typically 2.25" or 2.5"), an H or X crossover pipe, and a set of free-flowing turbo mufflers. If you can afford to go ahead and add a set of long tube headers, then you're even better off.

This might be just a little bit spendy, but would make a great "first" upgrade. Definitely fits the catagory of "single most effective mod".

Forced Induction....The 5 C's go together so you can't pick just one of those.

proformance out of the engine?
Well assuming you mean performance.....we still need to define performance.

Do you define performance as:

1. More Horsepower
2. More torque
3. Better gas mileage
4. Healthier sound
5. Lopey idle
6. Shiny Blingy things to point to when the hood is open
7. 1/4 timeslips
8. 1/8 timeslips
9. 1.4 60 foot times
10. No overheating and spewing green **** all over the parking lot
11. Red light to red light driving
12. Cold startable
13. The ability to safely deliver you to and from any destination
14. The ability to towed to any destination and then safely driven while at that destination
15. This list could get long

However, in my experience the single best performance mod you can make to an old mustang is....................

To attach one of these

To an account with one of these

Where you store alot of these

Building a motor is all about selecting components that will work together effeciently and produce power to meet a stated goal.

the previous owner of my 68 stang used to street race it, that is how he lost the car, and there are dual exausts on it, god i love the sound of them! there is hi proformance headers, i belive a high proformance hir cleaner. i am willing ot bet he put about $3000 worth of mods on this car. a friend of mine says, that when i take this car out for a drive the FIRST time, he says if this car does not scare the **** out of me then there is something wrong with me. he siad it will make me never want to drive it again. so i hvae to start slow, go up and down the street a couple times every time icreasing my speed untill i feel comfortable enough to take it on the high way.
