Pinging, knocking or pinking is when the fuel air mixture is ignited by compression and not the flame front produced by the spark plug see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinging

Very simply stated, it is pre-detonation.

I think of dieseling as when the engine keeps running after you turn off the key, and pinging is that rattling sound you get when you put the engine under load.

run on or dieseling is preignition before the spark is fired and will cause the engine to carry on after igntion is off, pinging is pre-ignition of part of the fuel air mix and make the block into a xylophone and you hear a ping, they are similar but different

I googled it and the pinging is sound is caused by the meeting of the wavefronts of the two near simultaneous explosions occuring in the chamber---one explosion from compression and one explosion originating from the sparkplug. So, in a sense it is dieseling and a regular spark plug ignition at the same time. Pinging is the sound it makes.

Oh Well, at any rate. If you have either of these symptoms., you need a tune-up.
Poker at my house tonight. The dealer is wild.
